I had been in is working group for a few years, playing local gigs in and around NYC, but he was going to be making an album with the legendary Jimmy Cobb on drums. \r\nThe first step in this process was to rehearse the tunes before going into the studio. \r\nValery organized a rehearsal at the New School in NYC, where Jimmy was teaching and asked me to come along and play through the material while Jimmy listened. This was my first meeting with him, the drummer on Kind of Blue!! I was both nervous to play in front of him and totally excited to meet him.\r\n\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\r\nI remember playing through the first tune, which had sort of a delicate introduction, and I was feeling SO self conscious. The tune ended and the small rehearsal room was quiet for a second. I looked over at Jimmy and he just said, “Got any brushes?”. Then he sat down and played the tune beautifully. A lesson in grace and swing. \r\n\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\r\nLater that year, after the CD came out, Valery was set to do a week at The Jazz Standard club in celebration of its release with Jimmy Cobb on drums. At the time of the booking,Jimmy had thought that he had a conflict with Sunday, the final night of the engagement. So Valery asked me to do the Sunday. When I showed up with my drums for sound check, I was extremely surprised to see Mr. Cobb sitting at the bar already!! He had made a mistake on his calendar and apparently had no conflict after all. We said hello and exchanged pleasantries and I nervously made my way to the bandstand to set up and tune my drums. At the time I had been playing a round badge Gretsch kit with a 16” bass drum. I had seen another of my heroes, Billy Higgins play a bass drum that size and had had a floor tom converted to a bass drum to match his. \r\n\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\r\nI finished setting up and tuning and walked to the bar to sit with Jimmy. He said,” Where did you get that Smiling Billy bass drum?” “Smiling Billy” was a nickname for Billy Higgins and his ever present smile.  I proudly said,” I had it made! Do you dig it? How does it sound?”\r\nHe replied, “It sounds like a floor tom.” and we both immediately burst out laughing. I guess I should’ve been slightly crushed that my hero was unimpressed with its sound. But in actuality he delivered a lesson with humor and humanity. Sound is sound!\r\nHe stayed for the whole gig and afterwards gave me a big hug and said,” Yeah, baby! You swingin’ ya ass off!” I was thrilled. \r\nOver the years I would see him once in a while and he was always warm, gracious and encouraging. He was of such legendary status, yet so down to earth.  A few times I even gave him a lift home to his place in Harlem on a 137th St., a NYC residence he kept since his tenure with Miles. He would still stay there when he was in town. \r\n\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\r\nOn one such occasion I asked him if he wanted to stop for some food. He said, “ Sure! I could eat something!” We hit an all night diner and I ordered a steak. Ryland started playing with many different groups in Orange County and L.A., and worked with bands such as Audiovent, The Elected, Gerry Beckley (of America), Suburban Legends, Start Trouble, and Free Moral Agents.  \r\n\tThe latest stage in his career has proved to be his most rewarding – joining Orange County ska/punk band Reel Big Fish and touring the world and recording.  Ryland can be heard on the band's double live album + DVD Our Live Album Is Better Than Your Live Album, 2007's Monkeys For Nothing And Your Chimps For Free, and recent album release Fame, Fortune and Fornication.  Ryland spends 6-8 months a year on the road with the band, entertaining crowds of thousands each night across the U.S. and U.K.  Along with headlining shows, the band plays the European festival circuit annually, including sets at Reading and Leeds in the U.K., Rock am Park and Rock am Ring in Germany, and also played the 2006 Dubai Desert Rock Festival in the Middle East.  \r\n\tBeing on the road has given Ryland the chance to develop himself as a professional player and make a name for himself as a gifted drummer. Post-graduation, at the age of 19, he went on the road with legendary blues guitarist, Albert King, which opened many doors and allowed him to become a full-time musician. Growing up in Memphis, he shared the stage with many notables, including BB King and Rufus Thomas. In 1991, he moved to San Diego, California and quickly became a major player in the local music scene. It was here where he played drums with Sha Na Na for almost two years and toured the US and Japan. He is featured on two of their CDs: Live in Japan, (Sony Japan) and Rockin' Christmas, (The Gold Label). Afterward, he went on the road for three years with Robert Walter's 20th Congress and is featured on Giving up the Ghost, (Magnatude Records). In 2003, he began drumming with North Florida's own JJ Grey and MOFRO with whom he spent the better part of five years touring the US, Canada, Europe and Australia, and is featured on three of their CDs: Blackwater, Lochloosa and Country Ghetto (all on Alligator Records). In 2006, he teamed with soul singer Ruthie Foster to record her critically acclaimed CD, The Phenomenal Ruthie Foster, (Blue Corn Records) which debuted at #2 on the Billboard blues chart.
